ELD Selection guide for fleets

Small Fleet ELD Selection Guide

This ELD Guide is intended to help small fleets and trucking companies as they evaluate the leading ELD providers in the market.

Did you know that 91% of all carriers with a USDOT number have 6 or less trucks in their fleet? Did you also know that these carriers haul over 50% of the freight tonnage moved in the United States each year? With the enforcement of the ELD mandate well underway, many small trucking companies are evaluating telematics technology for the first time.

With more than 300 “self-certified” providers on the FMCSA’s list of registered ELD suppliers, how in the world can small carriers make an intelligent decision on which provider to choose in helping them implement ELD technology?

ELD Selection Guide

This ELD Selection Guide infographic shows an unbiased comparison of the top providers in ELD and fleet management systems. Each of these providers has solutions that not only provide basic compliance, but additionally offer advanced fleet management functions.

While some of these providers have been around for decades, some of the names on this analysis are relative newcomers to the telematics and fleet management markets.

Questions for selecting a provider

When selecting a provider, small companies need to ask themselves the following key questions.

  1. Is my provider on the FMCSA list of self-certified ELD providers?
  2. What is the 3 year cost of installing and running each provider’s solution?
  3. Does the provider require that I sign a contract?
  4. What happens if I am not satisfied with the solution and service that I receive?
  5. What additional value can I receive from the provider beyond basic ELD & Fleet Management?

All of the providers in this analysis have a product that is currently on the FMCSA self-certified ELD listing.

As the infographic clearly shows, there is a huge cost difference between the providers with the most expensive solution clocking in at more than $52 per truck per month. The least expensive solution on the list is a tie between My20 and Big Road at $25 per truck per month…that is less than 1/2 what the old tech telematics companies charge.

However, My20 has the clear advantage over Big Road in terms of fleet management functionality. Additionally, My20 is the only provider on the list that (1) does not require a contract, and (2) provides load opportunities to its customers.

Service can be more important than cost

Perhaps on of the most important, and overlooked, aspects of choosing an ELD / Fleet Management technology provider is that of support and customer service. You should ask yourself, what are customers of these solutions saying about their providers? Does the provider answer the phone, and solve the problems that their customers will inevitably encounter?

If a provider claims to be “#1 Rated”, ask yourself the question, who is doing the rating? Does the provider accept real customer reviews on a reputable and know marketplace like Amazon. If not, you may want to consider why there are no true customer reviews on independent marketplaces.

In summary, choosing new technology for small fleets can feel like an overwhelming task. If you are looking for a true partner to help you navigate these issues, call My20 today at 865-888-My20 and find out why we are the #1 Rated ELD in America by our CUSTOMERS.
